As part of Week 3: Exploring the Chips Behind Technology, the Bright Minds AI Summer Camp held its second live webinar on June 4th, bringing together students from across five countries to learn about the hidden world of semiconductors and microelectronics.
We were honored to welcome two special guests from SEMI Europe:
Irene Da Pont, EU project manager and coordinator of the European Chips Skills Academy (ECSA), passionate about connecting students with future careers in the chip industry.
Bernard (Bernie) Capraro, Senior Manager for University Programs and Talent Initiatives at SEMI Europe, with over 30 years of experience in the semiconductor field.
Together, they helped students discover how microchips — although invisible to the eye — are essential to nearly every piece of technology we use today, from phones and laptops to cars and medical devices.
What Students Learned
In this interactive session, students explored:
The difference between semiconductors and microchips
How chips are made, and what makes them "smart"
Why skills in science, engineering, and technology are key to Europe’s future
The many roles — beyond engineering — that support the chip industry (education, communication, design, logistics, etc.)
The webinar emphasized the importance of STEM education, cross-sector collaboration, and preparing for future tech careers through initiatives like ECSA.
Join the ChipQuest Challenge
At the end of the session, students were invited to participate in the ChipQuest Challenge — a Europe-wide creative contest where they can submit a short video to explain semiconductors in a fun and educational way.
🎁 Prizes include:
A tech device of your choice (valued up to €1,000)
Industry mentorship sessions
Company tours
Tickets to SEMICON Europa, Europe’s leading microelectronics event
A Glimpse into the Future
Thanks to Irene and Bernie, students gained more than technical knowledge — they saw how their curiosity and creativity can shape the future of innovation. With relatable stories and a clear message, the session helped connect classroom learning with real-world careers in the fast-growing world of microelectronics.
👏 We thank SEMI Europe, ECSA, and our wonderful guest speakers for inspiring the next generation of tech leaders!
